Reviews, Critiques, and Ratings

Nineteen Eighty-Four - George Orwell ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

I found this novel to be an interesting approach to the dystopian-fiction genre. The story takes a political and social pathway that highlights the dangers of totalitarianism in government, how it can drastically affect social life, and the way that it demolishes "traditional" relationships like the one Winston and Julia strive to have. My only major criticism is Book Two. This part is needed to progress the storyline, but it is tedious and does not reveal much until its final chapters.

Book 3, on the other hand, is the most engaging and action-packed of all the books and chapters and is filled with twists and turns that change the entire trajectory of the arcs of specific characters and the story as a whole. The ending is unfulfilling, but I still respect it and see the significance of the message and moral it is attempting to convey. Overall, I would give Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four a four out of five stars. It bears an important message and was able to communicate it effectively while also telling a great and engaging story.

Anthem - Ayn Rand ⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Ayn Rand's 1938 novella is simple and straightforward, yet packs a serious philosophical punch with its meaning and message. This book was short and easy to read, so it held my attention better than the other, longer classics such as Nineteen Eighty-Four. The protagonist's (Equality-72521) ability to maintain his individuality in a society overrun by collectivism is inspiring and creates a sense of motivation to want to lead.

One criticism I have of this story and something that may turn many readers off is the overbearing level of individualism reflected throughout. It could come off to some readers as selfish, and it definitely was not something that helped pique my interest in the storyline. Nonetheless, I thought this novella was decent altogether, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick but interesting read.
